Staff is friendly, and ready to help however they can. For example, staff can help open and close any doors, help you find quiet areas if needed, etc.

There are folding chairs with a backrest available throughout the property that are available to use. If you need one and do not see any, you may request one. Staff can be reached at (804) 227-3500 if there is not a staff member nearby.

The location is service animal friendly in all buildings and areas, but not pet friendly in the buildings.

There is a self-guided audio tour that you can take of the outside of the house and grounds available through your cell phone by dialing numbers shown on signs around the property.

There is a large parking area about 200-250 feet away from the main entrance to the visitor center.

The parking lot surface is gravel and grass that does not have any pavement markings for parking spots, nor accessible signage.

The pathway from the parking lot to the entrance of the visitor center and the house is mostly gravel and grass.

The surface of the location’s outdoor paths can be uneven in spots, with a step up or down here or there.

A pavilion near the parking lot has numerous picnic tables and a grill at an accessible height, but no accessible picnic tables with additional overhang and space underneath for a wheelchair.

There is a slight lip at the transition from the gravel path to the concrete surface of the pavilion, and another step up from the gravel and grass path up to the brick walkway near the visitor center.

The visitor center, main house, cellar, and attic are accessed via stairs only, with handrails on some staircases that are only on one side, with no handrail extensions in some spots. The main house, cellar, and attic are not part of the self-guided tours.

The entrance door to the visitor center and the doorway within the visitor center are less than 32 inches wide.

Most doors have door knobs at accessible heights, and the doors that are part of the house tour are opened by the tour guide.

The interior of the buildings have space to maneuver mobility devices.

The majority of interior pathways in the main house are wide, and a few pathways in the visitor center are less than 32 inches wide.

Some of the interior spaces are dimly lit, mainly the cellar and the attic which may be challenging for some.

There are some seating options available throughout the property with seating surfaces at accessible heights.

The point of sale counter in the gift shop is slightly above an accessible height, but staff assists with credit card purchases.

There is some merchandise in the visitor center that may be difficult to reach for some, but staff is able to assist if needed.

The site is generally not too noisy, except for at scheduled times during reenactments or other events.

There are quiet spaces available in the museum rooms of the main house and the outdoor spaces are mostly quiet.

Ask staff for a more quiet, private space if needed.

Windows in most of the buildings have curtains/shades if a darker space is needed.

There is a single stall, gender neutral restroom, that has a ramp up to the door, and the clear width of the door is about 30 inches. This single stall restroom has grab bars around the toilet, although the side wall grab bar is installed on diagonally. There is also a multi-stall women’s room that has a step up to it, with two stalls. The interior of the single occupant restroom can accommodate a T-shaped turning space.

Be mindful of some exposed piping under the sink in the single occupant restroom.

Signage, where it exists, has good contrast, but no braille or tactile alternatives.
